St. Patrick's Parade and Community Day

A huge thanks to all that came out and supported yesterdays St. Patrick's Parade and Community Day - the weather certainly didn't put us off from having a great day.

There are a number of people we would like to thank for ensuring yesterday was a success, including:

Joanne Hanly for all the hard work with the children over the last 4 weeks resulting in the colorful and artistic spectacle we had yesterday; the support from the local schools - St. Patrick's and Rowandale (extra thanks to St. Patrick's for the use of their car park); all the volunteers and helpers who gave up their time in preparing the club facilities, serving out the food, working in the kitchen, cleaning, or helped in any other way during the day.

The day wouldn't have worked without those who performed on the day, so a big thanks to all our performers who sang and danced including Mick Brady (Threes a Crowd Music) for preparing the Samba Band; Back to Black for performing last night; and Tom the Piper for leading yesterdays parade.

Thanks to Fr. Conor for faciliting the St. Patrick's Day Mass to coincide with the parade; Wee Paddy's Bistro for supplying the stew and to the NI School of Falconry; C&J's Animal Park; and Almost Home Animal Rescue NI for giving up their time to come and join us yesterday - i think its safe to say everyone enjoyed you being here.

Finally a word of thanks to the Big Lottery Fund , who's contribution and support  allowed yesterday to happen.

Hopefully we haven't missed anyone out - apologies if we have - but huge thanks again to everyone that contributed yesterday.

Down Junior Championship

Down 1991 Celebration Dinner

It is hard to believe that 25 years have passed since Down's All Ireland Senior Football win of 1991, a day that brought great pride to the County as a new generation took on the mantle of the great teams of the 60s and brought the Sam Maguire back to the Mournes.

On 1st October in the Canal Court Hotel in Newry Down GAA will honour the men of 1991 at a special celebration dinner. We will be joined on the night by members of the Meath panel of that year and there will be a question and answer session.

This will be a night where the Down GAA family get the chance to salute those men who were all our heroes 25 years ago. There will be opportunities to mingle with the players and the Sam Maguire cup will be in attendance.

It is hoped that the Clubs of Down will be represented in great numbers at this event and that each Club would purchase a table of 10 people at £400 or a number of individual tickets at £45 each.

The 1991 players and management have asked that the benefits raised by this dinner would be their legacy fund to the next generation of aspiring Down players in the Mourne Academy. A raffle for some outstanding prizes will also be held on the night in support of Chest, Heart and Stroke in memory of the late great Ambrose Rogers.

To purchase tickets please contact Martina Casement at accounts.down@gaa.ie or by telephone on 028 437 70880.

Please see attached details of an upcoming course for people who would like to assist as Stewards at Match Days in Down in 2017.

Underage Round-Up (7th June)

Been a mixed couple weeks for our U12 and U14 teams.

U12s got a great win last week against Newry Shamrocks which edged them closer to the top position in their league. They also took part in the Newry Mitchels Tournament on Saturday past (see photos). This is one of the leading U12 tournaments in the country, with 48 teams from 16 counties attending. This was a big step up from the Down league, and the kids battled hard against some of the biggest senior clubs in the country. Our kids proved to be as skill-full as many of their opponents, taking some excellent scores, however they couldn't withstand the physical power of the some of the teams, who had U12s playing that were close to 6ft tall. It was a great learning curve for both the kids and mentors and once this team matures physically, they won't be far away from competing at a very decent level in the Down underage leagues.

After winning their first 5 league games, our U14s found themselves in a very strong league position, meaning they had already qualified for their league playoffs with 5 games to spare. Over the past 10 days, they have played a further 3 games, which were all tight encounters. Although the team put in 3 decent performances, lady luck was definitely absent as the guys lost narrowly in the 3 games. They have two further league games remaining before they enter the playoffs, so no better time to get back to winning ways and build up a bit of momentum. The key is to keep working hard and things will turn for the better.

Centenary Cup

Under 14's Vs Glenn

U14s earned another win tonight at home over Glenn, winning 2-9 to 0-6. Although the scoreline suggests a comfortable win, this game was in the balance, right up to the last 10 minutes, when our lads scored two goals in quick succession to put some distance between them and the visitors. Glen still managed to rally and only for some great last ditch defending by our lads, Glen could of easily got back into the game. The boys battled hard tonight and it took the whole squad to get the result, as several players had to be replaced due to injures. At the half way point in the league, our U14s sit top of their league, however with a few difficult away games coming up, focus and hard-work will be required to maintain their lofty position.

Down GAA Meet and Greet

A 'Meet and Greet' is taking place on Wednesday 25th May at 7pm in Pairc Esler. Great opportunity, especially for underage members to get up close to the current Down players, with Merchandise available on the night, and an opportunity to get new EOS jersey signed.

Under 12's Vs Newry Bosco

6 weeks ago, our U12s travelled up to Newry Bosco and suffered a heavy defeat on a very tight pitch. Since then the kids have put allot of work into training and picked up a few wins along the way. Today at home, on a larger pitch, the kids put in their best performance of the season winning 4-12 to 3-2 against Newry Bosco in the return fixture. After a disastrous first 10 mins, we found ourselves 7 points down. However once we steadied the ship and got back to basics the team were outstanding, picking of 5 unanswered points and scoring a goal on the stroke of halftime to go level at the break. The second half was a fantastic display of sharp tackling at the back and quick team interplay moving forward, with the kids taking some excellent points and goals. Hopefully the kids can keep up the good work in training and get their rewards on the pitch during the rest of their league campaign.

Under 14's vs Atticall (16th May)

Our 14s moved to the top of their league, with a hard earned home win over Attical tonight, claiming their 3rd league win in 4 games. The beauty about U14 football, is that the games are end to end and serve up plenty of action. Entering the final 5 minutes of the first half, the lads were in cruise control, controlling and leading the visitors by 4 points, only for Attical to burst into life and lead by 5 points with a minute to go in the half. Fortunately a goal by our lads right on the stroke of half time, brought us back into game. The second half was pure action, with end to end football and nothing could seperate the teams with five minutes left. Quick thinking from a free, resulted in a well taken goal by us and this was soon followed up by another goal and well taken point, earning us a win of 6-7 to 3-10. Each team showed allot of grit and worked hard, with both teams having their dominant periods, however our lads finished the strongest with those two late goals, to inflict Atticals first defeat of the season.

Under 12's

U12s had a tough home game to Eire Og (Glassdrumman and Ballymartin amalgamation) this morning, going down 4-11 to 3-4. Despite missing several players through injury and holidays, we started the game very brightly, playing some great open football, to dominate the first 15mins. However wasteful finishing meant we didn't take advantage of our dominance and Eire Og finished the half with two well taken goals to leave them up by 7 points at half time. Playing against the wind in the second half the kids battled hard against an Eire Og team, who were extremely strong in midfield. The kids kept creating chances and just could not convert enough to bring them back into the game. Hopefully they will learn from this and put some hard work into training, to prepare for our next league game at home in 3 weeks time.

Under 14's

Monday night was a great test for our U14s, who welcomed Eire Og, (an amalgamation of Glassdrumman and Ballymartin) to Ballymacbredan Road. Both sides played very well, in what was a decent game of football. The first half saw us put in an excellent team performance, scoring five goals in the process, to lead by 9 points at the break. However Eire Og put in a great second half and only for some wasteful finishing, could of got something out off the game. In the end, our boys kept battling away and responded to the challenge with some great tackling and tracking back. This, mixed with some well worked points, resulted in a victory of 6-3 to 1-11. It's been a solid start to the season for the boys, winning their first two games.

The club would like to wish Conor Lavery, Simon Crozier and Brian McCabe and the whole senior team well for the incoming season.

The game will now be played at the Derrylecka playing fields, just outside Newry, as a result of the recent poor weather.

Under 14's

Congratulations to the combined u14 team of St. Michaels and Newry Mitchels - playing as Tir naNog who got their season under way with a 7-5 to 2-7 victory at Glenn on Monday night past.

Leading by two points at halftime, the boys finally took control of the game midway through the 2nd half, with two quick fire goals to leave the final result a formality.

The conditions ensured there was plenty of slips and spills, but the lads determination, combined with a few well worked scores, result in a well earned victory.

Both the boys from Tir Na Og and Glen, deserve full credit for their efforts, on what was very tough conditions to play football in. Well done all.

St. Patrick's Day 2016

On behalf of St. Michael's, a huge thanks to all who came along and supported us, in what was our first ever St. Patrick's Day parade. We hope everyone enjoyed themselves, and it was great to see such huge numbers turn out from all sides of the community.

A special word of thanks to the two schools - St. Patrick's PS (and in particular the Samba Band) and Rowandale Integrated School for all their help and support over the last number of weeks, as well as the Magheralin Community Association and also Fr. Brian.

Thanks also to all those who helped out over the last four weeks at the workshops, creating the wonderful colours and craftwork that was on display; and to Piper Tom, the musicians, and the dancers that performed.

Finally thanks to Wee Paddy's Bistro (Lurgan) for supplying the stew and to everyone else who supplied food and refreshments.

St. Patrick's Day Parade Arrangements

Just a couple of notes regarding Thursday's St. Patrick's Day parade:

  1. Parents are also welcome to walk with the parade as it makes its way to the football club, or alternatively you can make your way straight to the club.
  2. Thursday is due to be a dry day, so children will therefore have the opportunity to play football on the pitch - so don't forget your boots or trainers.
  3. Any parents or children not attending the 9.30am Mass, please be at the car park of the Parish Hall for 10.00am to allow everything to be put in place for the parade to begin SHARPLY at 10.30am. This is due to arrangements put in place with the police for stopping the traffic on the main Belfast Road, to accommodate the parade.
  4. Food will be served at 12.00pm and the day should finish up at about 2.00pm.
  5. Gates of the club will be opened from 9.00am for anyone that wants to park their car within the club grounds.
  6. We would advise people not to park their cars on Ballymacbredan Road, as the parade will be making its way as far as McDonald's Terrace, where they will do a circuit of the houses, before returning to the club.
  7. If anyone has to park elsewhere, can we ask you to be mindful where you park and to respect local residents, ensuring that driveways or entrances to houses or buildings are not blocked.

Thanks.

New Referee Training 2016

The Down Referee’s Administration Committee are currently seeking to recruit new football and hurling referees for the 2016 season. Full training shall be provided for new recruits in accordance with guidelines set down by the National Referees Committee in Croke Park.

Ideal candidates are young people that are either still playing or have recently retired from our games. At first glance a lot of people might well ask, “Who would be a referee”, but it is a role that quite apart from being essential to the future of our games, has many benefits and rewards.

Why Become a GAA Referee?

·         Stay involved with the game as an alternative to playing

·         Fitness – It’s a great way to keep fit

·         Ambition – could you referee a County Final or even an All-Ireland?

·         Learn more about the game

·         Give Something Back - offers players, at the end of their playing days, the opportunity to continue in the sport

·         Personal Development - helps to develop personal skills that are of value in all walks of life

What qualities are required to become a GAA Referee?

·         Good knowledge of the playing rules

·         Be physically and mentally fit

·         Have the ability to remain calm

·         Have the moral courage to take decisions which are correct

The training takes place over three sessions. The first session shall be in the Burrendale Hotel on Monday 15th February at 7.30pm. The second session is taken online via the Croke Park website. The third session shall be on Friday 19th February at 7.30pm in the Burrendale Hotel.

If anyone is interested, please contact Fearghal at secretary.stmichaels.down@gaa.ie

Christmas New Year Quiz

A huge thanks to all that turned up last night and supported the Christmas/ New Year quiz. A good nights craic was had by all, in what was a close run and highly competitive quiz, organised once again by quizmaster Thomas Hamill and his assistant Brendan Marsden.

In a close contest the whole way through, the winning team "The Seven Dwarfs" pulled away in the last two rounds to win by four points.

Story of the night however, had to be, once again, the collapse of Paddy Lavery and his team, who after leading at one stage, fell away in remarkable fashion to finish runners up for the fourth consecutive year. There's always next year.

Last Man Standing

Marty Downey aka "Deester" , winner of the initial Last Man Standing competition, receives his prize of £100 from the very despondent and runner up in the competition - "Clums" (Brendy Marsden).

Hughes Havern Sloan Charity Match

As you may be aware, a few months ago there was an accident on the A1 which lead to the loss of three young men: Conall Havern, Peter Hughes and Gavin Sloan.
In order to remember the men, a memorial charity football match has been organized by the friends and family of the men.
This will be held on the 2nd January at Dromintee football grounds and will comprise of two teams; a South Armagh select and a South Down select made up from friends and family.

The organising committee for the Havern, Hughes and Sloan memorial charity match want to extend the application to play in the match to as many people as possible in order to not exclude anyone wishing to play on the day, the 2nd of January.

However due to the limited time frame and insurance purposes only registered members of GAA clubs will be eligible to play.

As a result we made a set of qualifying rules in order to curtail numbers which is outlined in the attached form - click here

The form must be completed by next Saturday the 19th of December.

Please send your filled in application to our email;

Each club is initially being asked to sell 24 tickets. However, for every additional ticket sold by St. Michael's (after the initial 24), the club receives back £96.00 on each ticket - so, for example, if the club is to sell an additional 50 tickets, this would generate approx. £5000 for the club.

Down National Football League - Home Fixtures

Once again this year there is a €5 pre-purchase discount (€10/£9.00 pre-purchase price as opposed to €15 on match day) for all Division 1 and Division 2 Football league fixtures and this is something that we are keen to promote as much as possible.

For all of our Allianz League Games, Tickets can be purchased in advance from the County Office in Castlewellan, you thus can on Match Days proceed straight to the Turnstiles with no worries of queuing and you can do so by saving money too.

It will offer supporters better value and also take some of the pressure off ticket sales at the various venues on match days.

One key point to note is that this discount is only valid until midnight on the day before each fixture.

Please avail of this opportunity, beat the Queues, get to Castlewellan and buy your ticket for just £9.00.
